Construction site falls account for one of every three construction related fatalities. According to 2007 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were at least 442 construction worker deaths during 2007 as a result of falls. Falls may involve workers from every trade and occur in a wide variety of circumstances. The severity of fall injuries is not necessarily related to the distance of the fall. Catastrophic injuries can occur in falls of only a few feet.
Construction workers suffering fall accidents typically involve the following:
- By far the greatest number of falls are from roofs, whether simply falling off, falling through a skylight or some other unprotected opening.
- Falls at ground level caused by tripping hazards such as construction debris or materials. These accidents can sometimes be fatal when they involve objects like unguarded protruding rebar.
- Falls at ground level through poorly constructed covers to subterranean levels of the project such as underground parking.
- Falls from scaffolds which are commonly caused by improperly constructed scaffolds. Frequently scaffolds are constructed by mixing pieces from different scaffolds which can be an OSHA violation.
- Falls from scaffolds due to a lack of guardrails or guardrails with openings at the ends of scaffold platforms.
- Falls from portable ladders that are not positioned properly or have broken components such as rungs, steps, side rails and locking mechanisms.
